Jameel Martin is a Brooklyn-based musician and writer. His play, “Ransom Place,” premiered at the Onyx Theater Festival, and was published in the inaugural issue of A Common Well Journal. It was then selected for Overtone Industries’ Original Vision development workshop, transforming the play into an opera with long-time collaborator and friend, Daniel Hass. His queer adaptation of Janacek’s song cycle, “The Diary of One Who Disappeared,” premiered in Valdres, Norway, in summer 2023. In January, he co-curated and performed a multi-disciplinary recital program with Randall Goosby, entitled “Intersections: Black Music and Words,” at London’s Southbank Centre, featuring musical performances and readings of his poetry. A graduate of the Juilliard School, Jameel is the founding violist of the Renaissance String Quartet. He is currently pursuing an MFA with a concentration in poetry at Brooklyn College, where he is an adjunct professor of english composition, and co-editor-in-chief/poetry editor of The Brooklyn Review.
